Overview
Hood River has three distinct trail systems, each with its own season (Local Freshies, May 18, 2026: https://localfreshies.com/hood-river-mountain-biking/ (opens in a new tab)): Post Canyon (60+ miles of gravity/flow trail on a county tree farm; best late spring and fall), 44 Trails on the flank of Mt. Hood (150+ miles of backcountry XC; summer after snow melts), and Syncline (open, rocky, mostly south-facing; the winter option). Post Canyon and the town are bikeable from each other; 44 Trails is 30-45 minutes by car (https://localfreshies.com/44-trails-mtb-guide/ (opens in a new tab)). Heads-up for 2026: the Grasshopper Fire closed much of 44 Trails; the forest closure is "effective until 12/31/26 with the possibility of extensions" (44 Trails Association, posted Aug 14, 2026: https://www.44trails.org/ (opens in a new tab)). Post Canyon requires a Hood River County Forest parking permit: $10 daily / $45 annual since July 1, 2026 (https://www.hoodrivercounty.gov/parking-permit-details (opens in a new tab)).
Getting around / Shuttles
| Service | Status | Details printed on source | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oregon Territory Outfitters (OTO) (permit holder on Mt. Hood National Forest) | VerifiedSuspendedVerified, partly suspended | "Mt Hood Experience" full-day shuttle runs ($45/person; $35 Eastside; 4-10 people; reservation required; May-October) pick-ups at Zig Zag Ranger Station, Glacier View and Summit Snow Parks, and Surveyor's Ridge South TH, marked "Currently Unavailable due to Grasshopper Fire." "Timberline Down" private shuttles on Timberline-to-Town trails ($25/person; 4-10 people; 11 a.m.-4 p.m.; April-November; reservation) are listed without the fire warning. On-trail guide $150/day; rentals $100 full-suspension / $75 hardtail per day (reservation only; no e-bikes on these USFS trails). (971) 279-9450. | https://oregonterritoryoutfitters.com/ (opens in a new tab) |
| The Adventure Lodge shuttle service | Partial | Travel Oregon's listing for the lodge shows "Shuttle Service" among its Bike Friendly Business amenities; no schedule, price or routes on the page. | https://traveloregon.com/plan-your-trip/places-to-stay/hotels-motels/the-adventure-lodge-hood-river/ (opens in a new tab) |
| Fat Tire Farm "ride recommendations and shuttle routes" | Partial | Shop says it can advise on shuttle routes; it does not describe operating a shuttle. | https://hoodriverbicycles.com/ (opens in a new tab) |
Gap: no commercial Post Canyon shuttle found in any source checked. (Post Canyon staging areas are Seven Streams, Post Flats, Family Man, Binns Hill, Kingsley and Pinemont per the county permit page, so self-shuttling between fee zones is the practical approach; the county page does not describe shuttling.) Also: Syncline's Washington-side location and DIY shuttle norms came from search summaries and were not confirmed on a checked page.

Conditions & seasons
Official trail-conditions pages (checked 2026-10-15):
- Hood River County Trail Status: https://www.hoodrivercounty.gov/trail-status (opens in a new tab) . Latest entry 10/14/2026: county forest trails still closed to motorized use under Regulated Use Closure (reopen after about 1/4" rain); Oct 5 notice: salvage-logging closures Oct 6-7 (Upper Moto Trail-140, Three Blind Mice, 2 Chair, Upper Shadow, Upper El Dorado) and Oct 8-9 (Lower Moto Trail-140, B-Side), "may be extended"; current status of those trails is on the county's digital trail map (not confirmed). Non-motorized riding is not restricted by the RUC. Stay 300 ft from logging operations.
- 44 Trails Association / USFS closure: https://www.44trails.org/ (opens in a new tab) (posted Aug 14, 2026): Grasshopper Fire closure covering a large part of the network (including Lookout Mountain #450, Fifteen mile #456, Boulder Lake #463 and many others) through 12/31/26 unless extended. Confirm on the Mt. Hood National Forest closure page before listing any 44 Trails route.
- Third-party/volunteer: Post Canyon Conditions (https://postconditions.com/ (opens in a new tab)), last updated 10/10/2026: "Good: little bit rain." The Gorge Is My Gym table is dated 4/15/2026 and is Stale stale (https://thegorgeismygym.com/mountain-biking/ (opens in a new tab)); it listed Syncline "open with ticks and poison oak."
Best seasons: Post Canyon at its best late spring or fall; avoid riding when frozen/thawing; summer can go weeks without rain and get ball-bearing dry; 44 Trails is the summer system once snow melts (Local Freshies also says mid-to-late June in its 44 Trails guide, and that fall can be ideal but storms matter); Syncline is the winter go-to (low elevation, rocky) (https://localfreshies.com/hood-river-mountain-biking/ (opens in a new tab) ; https://localfreshies.com/44-trails-mtb-guide/ (opens in a new tab)). Right now (mid-October): Post Canyon in prime fall shape per volunteer report, but 44 Trails is largely closed and Fat Tire Farm's website shows conflicting winter-closure information (call ahead).
