Overview
Arkansas River town with a bike-in/bike-out trail system (Arkansas Hills / "S Mountain") at the edge of downtown and the Monarch Crest, an alpine point-to-point ride that needs a shuttle. Season note: the Forest Service says the Monarch Crest (CDT #531) "is closed by winter snow from November until June," and late-season snow can delay opening to late June or early July (USFS Salida Ranger District, 719-539-3591: https://www.fs.usda.gov/r02/psicc/recreation/trails/continental-divide-trail-531-monarch-crest (opens in a new tab) ). Mid-October is the tail end of shuttle season, so confirm with the operator before booking.
